Key Concepts (3) — Relational Literacy
Relational literacy is, in essence, the ability to comprehend and empathise with sentiments that are expressed by another person in their conversations, attitudes and actions. It can be a taught skill, based on knowledge of how ideology, philosophy, religion, national culture, history and language shape other people’s thoughts, beliefs, and perceptions. Because Relational literacy is founded upon a greater/clearer understanding of human nature, it enables perspective, raising self-awareness in a way that contributes to deeper insights, understanding, compassion and problem solving. Therefore, Relational literacy enables a person or group to build and maintain friendships and relationships with peers, parents, teachers, family members and others because it teaches them how to relate more thoughtfully and effectively.
